Land is an exhibition that approaches the word broadly, from the farm to the backyard to the forest. This exhibition brings together gestural painting, video installation, and painted sculptures that co-opt found structures such as a trampoline, a tree carved with the words of a grandfather plus a large-scale mural consuming the walls of the gallery. Curated by Faculty Director of Galleries Tim Rietenbach, the exhibition features the work of Kurt Lightner, Bing Lee, Erin Mckenna, Kate Rhoades, and Ed Valentine, all alumni of Columbus College of Art & Design’s Fine Arts department who represent different times in the school’s history.

Ohio native Kurt Lightner currently lives and works in New York. He received his BA from Columbus College of Art and Design, and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY. Lightner’s paintings and sculptures have been included in exhibitions at PS1 MOMAKemper Museum of Contemporary ArtQueens Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, and are in numerous private and public collections. He has been a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and The Headlands Center for the Arts Project Studio Residency in San Francisco. Lightner had a solo exhibition in April 2019 at Contemporary Art Matters entitled Fruitpickers in which carved branches from the same boxelder tree were exhibited as part of this solo show.
